Mechanical recycling closer to the source.

SBM Tech is developing localized mechanical recycling, initially focused on battery production scrap, with opportunities to process suitable materials from end-of-life batteries. We work with gigafactories, battery collectors, dismantlers and recyclers to assess onsite, near-site and independent-facility options. Our focus is recovering black mass, copper and aluminum streams closer to where battery materials are generated or consolidated.

Battery manufacturing scrap: an unavoidable challenge.

Gigafactories generate production scrap that must be managed safely, compliantly and cost-effectively.

  • 01

    Scrap is unavoidable

    Production naturally generates scrap.

  • 02

    Volumes increase

More scrap as production ramps up.

  • 03

Must be managed safely and legally

    Requires proper handling and compliance.

  • 04

    Two main costs

    Processing fee and transportation.

  • 05

    Especially for LFP

Lower material value, and recycling often involves processing fees.

Localized mechanical recycling.

A flexible, cost-effective solution to preprocess battery manufacturing scrap near the gigafactory. SBM can help gigafactories manage production scrap with lower total cost and reduced logistics complexity.

Process and equipment details

  1. Gigafactory scrap

Cathode and anode (production) scrap, rejected cells and defective modules.

  2. SBM mechanical recycling

    Shredding, separation and preprocessing.

  3. Recovered outputs

    Black mass, copper and aluminum.

  4. Next steps

Outputs to downstream recyclers or further processing.

A practical, scalable mechanical recycling solution.

Our initial focus is battery production scrap. Hydrometallurgy and other battery waste streams are future opportunities.
